Posting period defines the financial transaction for the fiscal year which include the local taxation and other legal complication. So, as mentioned by GURU'S above - Opening and closing of the posting period is not advisable and is not a good practice.
For normal closing, yes, you can open and close the posting period using the transaction code OB52.
